We started this blog to keep family and friends up to date with our family mini-adventure to the USA and Canada - seeing the south west, then Toronto and finally New York. We will now try to keep it up to date with posts from home.

Cape Cod

August 17th, 2011 by Richard

A day in Cape Cod today (sounded better than driving for a full day to Washington). Did some holiday things – beach, swimming pool, mini golf, enormous and delicious ice creams at Sundae School, lobster dinner, and very good Italian food at Di Parma restaurant.

Now very chilled out ready for the last part of our adventure in New York.

Rhode Island

August 16th, 2011 by Richard

2 days in Rhode Island (the smallest and most populous of all the states) to see our old friends (perhaps longstanding friends sounds better) Paul and Fiona and their family. Fantastic to see them – can’t believe it’s about 7 years since we last saw them. Luckily they hadn’t changed a bit although Emma, Kirsten, Claire and Michael had!

A fun packed weekend by their pool, BBQ, toasted marshmallows (can’t remember their proper name), yacht trip, football (soccer) game, xbox, the biggest pizzas I’ve ever seen, and drunk a lot of Paul’s beer – couldn’t have been any better.

Hopefully we’ll see them again before too long.

The Blue Jays

August 13th, 2011 by Richard

Saved the Blue Jays game for our last evening in Toronto. Loved the game and the atmosphere – also how they manage to keep the crowd amused during the TV commercials. Was. Also very good to have Dave with us to explain some of the terms that we hadn’t picked up – designated hitter, change up etc.

Unfortunately the Blue Jays lost 5-1 even though we out hit them 7-4. Great evening though and great to see Dave and Ben again, and even managed to get a new cap for me and a t-shirt for Mandy.

ps Paul (Scottish Red Sox fan) thinks we are cruel getting the kids to support the Jays – thinks it is equivalent to Partick Thistle!

Ontario Place

August 12th, 2011 by Richard

A day out seeing Ontario Place today, a complex down by the lakeside that seems to be aimed at everyone – rides, water park, educational exhibits, exhibitions and lots of other things.

Ben and Matt spent most of the day in the water park while me and Mandy read our kindles – very relaxing day.

Niagara Falls

August 11th, 2011 by Richard

A trip to Niagara today for the 3 boys while Mandy went over the border to meet some work colleagues for the afternoon.

Spent the day seeing the Falls (I always forget how powerful they are when up close), doing the Maid of the Mist boat ride up to the falls (and getting very wet in the process), and seeing the beautiful oldie worldy little town of Niagara on the Lake.

We had a good time, particularly playing baseball with Matt’s socks while we waited for Mandy to pick us up!

A day in Guelph

August 10th, 2011 by Richard

Went up to see Dave, Monica, Ben and Claudia today in the lovely town of Guelph just west of Toronto. Had a superb time catching up on news from the past 13 years, playing baseball and American football, and eating and drinking (and the younger generation playing xbox). Rikki decided not to do the baseball or football but met up with us later on too.

Great fun catching up and seeing their home and family. Shame we can’t do it more often.

Toronto Islands

August 9th, 2011 by Richard

Spent today over at the Toronto Islands, consisting of 3 main islands in Lake Ontario about 7 minutes by ferry. Beautiful parks and scenery, and a beach and the lake for Ben and Matt to play on/in.

Took a picnic over there and spent most of the day there. Ben and Matt took their baseball gloves and a ball and threw that around for much of the afternoon. Then walked around 2 of the islands and took in the great views of downtown Toronto.

Rounded the day off with a pizza delivery 🙂

Breakfast at The Beaches

August 8th, 2011 by Mandy

Like old times, Sunday is the day for a walk down the board walk and then brunch at Sunset Grill. This was the first time I had done it without a pushchair…..

Then we caught the tram Downtown and looked through the sports shops, then walked to the CN Tower and Blue Jays stadium.

To finish the day off we went to a Drive In Movie to see ‘The Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ – it was great, we even had a thunderstorm on the middle of it.

August 6th, 2011 by Richard

Spent most of Thursday travelling down to LA, then most of Friday flying to Toronto. Arrived Friday night, picked up the car and drove to Guelph to see Rikki. Great to see her and Simon (her nephew) – went out for dinner and some local Canadian beers. Slept incredibly well and set off for our house in Toronto.

Drove down Yonge St and visited the places we used to live at Yonge/Lawrence and Yonge/St Clair. Very nostalgic and nice to drive downtown past the CN Tower. Then headed east a couple of miles to the house we are staying in. Located in Leslieville, Mandy has yet again managed to find us a superb place to live.

Looking forward to our week here.

Gualala Beach

August 4th, 2011 by Richard

Another day at the beach today, this time our local one in Gualala. A beautiful beach populated with pelicans constantly flying overhead. Very windy but sunshine all day – very pleasant. Mandy and Matt built a windbreak out of driftwood. Great picnic including what was left of our vast amounts of steak from last night.

Ben spent the day fishing using a homemade fishing rod – unfortunately he didn’t catch anything but I can’t criticise his endeavour.
